1822

The Portuguese Constitution of 1822 is the oldest text of its kind in the country, introducing a constitutional monarchy and seeking to put an end to absolutism. This set pays tribute to that date on the tray by portraying a row of soldiers carrying a feather stronger than the sword (and rifle). Wearing trousers in a palette of colors that alludes to a civil society, they are led by a figure inspired by Manuel Fernandes Tomás, a key figure of liberalism, who is drawing new limits imposed on the crown. This symbolism continues on the cups and saucers, with a reference to D. João VI exiled in Brazil and, in the representation of the swallows, to the new spring arriving in national politics.
